The waste sector is responsible for the implementation of the legal provisions of the Waste Management Law and related laws from the waste management section, as well as the by-laws arising from them in the section covering the waste management process as well as the Strategy for waste management, the National Plan for waste management, the national plan for the prevention of waste generation. Also, the sector is responsible for the implementation of the Law on the Management of Packaging and Packaging Waste, the Law on the Management of Electrical and Electronic Equipment and Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment, the Law on the Management of Batteries and Accumulators and Waste Batteries and Accumulators, the Law on management of additional waste streams and the Law on Extended Responsibility of Producers, as well as by-laws arising from these laws.
The sector also participates in the transposition and harmonization of EU directives in national legislation and analysis of changes to the corresponding EU directives.
The department is responsible for the implementation of projects in the field of waste management financed by budget funds, international grants or loans. It participates in the work of the working bodies of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia and the Government of the Republic of Macedonia, with authorization from the official who heads the ministry and cooperates with the local self-government units in the area of establishing regional systems for waste management as well as other issues.
